![]() ![]() Not to mention DeShawn didn’t have a whole lot to do with the plot or anything at all aside from being there to introduce and develop Will’s character. It’s as if we’re supposed to think, look at how these black people don’t even care about their own people. The fact that this white cop has to convince them, especially the black nurse, that this little boy’s life is worth saving is insulting writing. How is it even possible that the only person who wanted this black kid NOT to die was the white cop? We, the audience, are supposed to like Will because he’s so good and kind and even though black kids hate cops he’ll still do his job and help them! #NotAllCops am I right? The only two other people in these scenes, both black characters, are antagonized - they’re both cruel, refusing to help this kid because he might grow up to be violent. The white savior trope is SO heavy in these scenes. A while later, after DeShawn successfully pulls through surgery this black nurse again insinuates that Will should have just let the kid die because he’d grow up to be a violent gang member who’d probably end up killing a cop. ![]() When they get to the hospital, Will has to practically beg a black female nurse to help the kid, whose name is DeShawn. You do not want to stand there and let this kid die either.”ĭiego: “That’s what he’d do if it was you or me.” In the scene, Will tells Diego, his partner, to get an ambulance and Diego replies, “What? What do you think this is, TV?” The dialogue that follows is this: Will’s partner, who’s an Afro-Latino cop, wanted to just leave the kid there. Let’s discuss the white-savior storyline we get from the very first episode when white police officer Will saves a young black boy from bleeding out from a gunshot wound. Is having LGBT characters and characters of color supposed to enough for us in terms of representation? Because for a show that’s supposed to be progressive or whatever, Sense8 is unbelievably racist. The show features characters of various ethnicities and sexualities and an interesting plot line that could have been captivating enough if only it wasn’t overshadowed with all the problems it brought with it. Sense8 is a popular Netflix show that has been hailed for its diversity and progressiveness since the release of its first season.
